CUPID project was officially approved by the Linux Foundation for Energy

InterSTORE achieved a vital milestone
June 12, 2025

On 13 May 2025, the InterSTORE* achieved a significant milestone by successfully presenting its project: Controllable Unit Protocol Interface for Distributed Energy Resources (CUPID) to the Linux Foundation for Energy (LFE) Technical Advisory Committee (TAC). CUPID is the LFE project that will extend the InterSTORE project by supporting its integration into the foundation’s ecosystem. This continuity will allow future pursuit of interoperability goals beyond the official finish of the InterSTORE at the end of December 2025.

CUPID focuses on enabling collaborative development and standardization of distributed energy systems through open-source tools. Central to this initiative is the implementation and promotion of interoperability anchored in the IEEE2030.5 standard. Key developments showcased during the presentation included a sophisticated client/server library facilitating NATS messaging and extending that by supporting tools such as a Legacy Protocol Converter (LPC), and comprehensive testing frameworks.

The pitch was led by Antonello Monti of RWTH Aachen University, who coordinates the InterSTORE project. The main highlights were CUPID’s substantial technical progress and its value to the broader LFE community, as well as the significance of community engagement, transparency, and collaborative innovation. The presentation resonated with the LFE TAC, thus, CUPID was formally approved as a Linux Foundation project. Subsequently, a dedicated repository was established, hosting the latest release of the Legacy Protocol Converter, version 1.3.3, and other essential resources. This integration signifies a crucial advancement towards open standards in energy systems, facilitating widespread industry adoption and fostering sustainable energy technology development.

It is an honor for us to work alongside our partners on the InterSTORE project. We are thrilled to announce that the CUPID Technical Steering Committee (TSC) is formed by Chairperson: Antonello Monti; Secretary: Alexandre Lucas, Release Manager: Matjaz Juric; Documentation Lead: Peter Nemcek. Through this structured leadership, the CUPID initiative is positioned to effectively drive forward ongoing innovations and contributions to the Linux Foundation for Energy.
