Powerlink has successfully commissioned a stand-alone 20 MW / 40 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in Hörsching, Upper Austria. Despite ambitious timelines, the project was delivered successfully and it is already participating in balancing services and wholesale electricity markets. The order was placed in December of 2025 and the battery entered operations in July 2026, being already prequalified to participate across ancillary services markets, day-ahead, and intraday markets.

It consists on a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery, which is located at Schachinger's Logisitc park in Hörsching. This park is one of the largest battery storage installations within Europe's logistic sector. In this case, the battery supplier was the LSG Group, who is also a co-owner of Powerlink alongside KE KELIT GmbH, MTA Holding GmbH, Pfeil GmbH, Peter Halatschek Holding GmbH, WMFB GmbH, and DDr. Werner Steinecker.

Building the future of flexible energy infrastructure

Powerlink's long-term strategy focuses on accelerating the deployments of co-located energy projects. The company is actively diversifying its portfolio by combining battery energy storage systems with electric vehicle charging infrastructure, industrial sites, research centers, photovoltaic (PV) installations, and wind power projects.

"Nowadays, the balancing services market is really attractive. We win around 80-85% of our revenues on balancing services. Revenue stacking is for us very important as well as battery optimization. We should participate in different markets, both in wholesale markets like day-ahead and intraday as well as in balancing markets namely FCR, aFRR, mFRR." - Manuel Pfeil, Co-owner of Powerlink.

CyberGrid: "one of the most professional marketers in Austria"

CyberGrid was chosen to manage, optimize, and trade the flexibility of the battery after an "intensive selection process in 2025 comparing various flexibility marketers", as stated by Pfeil. This fruitful collaboration aims to generate the highest possible revenues and develop future projects for the Austrian industrial market.

"CyberGrid was a top choice partner for us from the very beginning because we know that they bring know-how from other assets and markets. Moreover, they are supported by a large energy supplier." - Manuel Pfeil, Co-owner of Powerlink.

In this case, what was relevant for Powerlink when choosing a partner was that CyberGrid "brought the necessary expertise for demand flexibility, especially behind-the-meter models where load curves of industrial companies are taken into account."

"CyberGrid proved to be one of the most professional marketers in Austria", remarked Pfeil.

About Powerlink

Powerlink has a pipeline of more than 40 projects in seven different countries: Austria, Germany, Check Republic, Romania, Bulgaria, Italy, and Belgium. Together, these projects represent approximately a total of 300 MW of power capacity and around 700 MWh of energy capacity, targeted for implementation by the second quarter of 2028. As previously mentioned, the company is owned by multiple owners and brings together several project partners and a strong industry network that enables the rapid development of projects.
