FlexRegler: enhancing grid stability and market participation in Austria

FlexRegler | EVN ancillary services market participation in Austria
February 4, 2025

FlexRegler is powered by CyberGrid's flexibility management platform, CyberNoc. It leverages CyberGrid's white-label software, providing customers with a tailored and seamless energy management experience.

EVN is using this comprehensive and highly automated solution to aggregate various energy assets and participate in balancing services. With this advanced technology, the utility can unlock value across multiple markets and benefit from state-of-the-art features such as real-time meter data management, forecasting, fully automated trading, and financial reporting, enabling efficient and profitable flexibility monetization.

Since July 2023, FlexRegler has been actively trading and providing Automatic Frequency Restoration Reserve (aFRR) and Manual Frequency Restoration Reserve (mFRR) flexibility to the Austrian Power Grid, the country’s Transmission System Operator (TSO). Fully integrated into the MARI and PICASSO cooperation, FlexRegler supports major transformations in Austria’s ancillary service markets, aligning them with European initiatives.

EVN and CyberGrid serve as a one-stop shop for asset owners looking to participate in TSO markets. With CyberGrid’s highly automated and integrated IT systems and EVN’s expert trading team, flexible assets can seamlessly access Austria’s ancillary services markets and generate additional revenue. Our solutions minimize operational and administrative efforts for asset owners, ensuring a streamlined and efficient participation process.

Flexibility management and market integration

FlexRegler acts as a central communication hub, seamlessly connecting with the Austrian Power Grid (APG) to streamline energy market operations. It manages the trading Application Programming Interface (API), facilitates Automot for mFRR activation and real-time data exchange, and oversees communication and control of third-party assets, ensuring efficient coordination across the energy sector. At its core, the software features a powerful autotrader designed for balancing services, including FCR, aFRR, and mFRR. This capability optimizes market participation, maximizing financial returns for users.

With broad compatibility, FlexRegler integrates a diverse range of energy assets, from battery storage, hydropower, and biogas units to solar PV, wind parks, and other renewables. It also supports cogeneration units, water heaters, heat pumps, and EV charging stations, enabling their participation in energy markets. By uniting these assets, FlexRegler helps users unlock their full potential, contributing to grid stability while maximizing value in multiple market scenarios.

New record: 100 MW of flexibility aggregated

In collaboration with EVN, we have reached a significant milestone—aggregating 100 MW of flexibility through EVN's FlexRegler in Austria. By seamlessly integrating flexibility assets into balancing service markets, we are enhancing flexibility management and maximizing revenue potential for EVN and its customers through strategic market participation.
