Power-to-heat flexibility marketing with Stadtwerke Wörgl

P2H flexibility marketing with Stadtwerke Wörgl in short-term electricity markets
August 25, 2025

Stadtwerke Wörgl, a community-focused utility in Tyrol, Austria, is leveraging CyberGrid's flexibility management platform, CyberNoc, to unlock the flexibility of their energy assets and monetize them in the balancing energy markets. This collaboration exemplifies how regional utilities can leverage digital platforms to enhance revenue streams while contributing to a more sustainable and resilient energy system.

CyberGrid started marketing the 1 MW Power-to-Heat (P2H) unit of Stadtwerke Wörgl's subsidiary Wörgl Wärme on the control reserve market. Additionally, we are involved in the prequalification of their small hydro storage powerplant that has a flexibility potential of 700 kW, and we plan to bring the asset to the same control reserve market.

Stadtwerke Wörgl required a solution to integrate its flexible energy assets into short-term trading markets efficiently. The goal of this collaboration is to leverage these assets for optimal revenue generation while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements set by the Austrian Power Grid (APG).

CyberGrid provides an end-to-end service for integrating Stadtwerke Wörgl’s flexible energy assets into the short-term trading market. The solution encompasses several key areas. First, it ensures regulatory compliance by developing a prequalification concept that met APG requirements and conducting test runs to validate system performance. Second, the technical integration of Stadtwerke Wörgl’s energy units into CyberNoc is achieved through the deployment of remote-control hardware, allowing for seamless market participation. Third, real-time monitoring and optimization of the asset are employed to maximize market participation and trading potential.

Through this collaboration, Stadtwerke Wörgl successfully trades its energy assets on the control reserve market. As a result, the company will achieve increased revenue from energy flexibility trading. The partnership between Stadtwerke Wörgl and CyberGrid not only improves financial performance but also supports the transition to a more flexible and sustainable energy system.
