Integration and monetization of distributed energy storage and flexibility resources

Embedded Open Source Summit 2023 - InterSTORE project
August 7, 2023

Nikolaj Candellari from CyberGrid and David Trafela from Sunesis presented the InterSTORE project at the LF Energy Embedded Summit 2023, an event that took place from the 27th until the 30th of June in Prague. They participated in the session "Open Source Interoperability Toolkit for Integration of Distributed Energy Storage and Other Flexibility Resources".

The EU funded project InterSTORE aims to address the complexities of storage by developing an interoperable middleware solution, virtualizing storage technologies as well as integrating and monetizing flexibility storage. The Flexibility Management Platform CyberNoc is being deployed within the project and enhanced with interoperability, Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) hybridization, and Energy Community software tools.

Distributed Energy Storage and real-time data exchange

There are two main challenges that the InterSTORE project aims to address: enhance the multiple communication protocols for the integration of Distributed Energy Storage (DES) into the market, and the increasing demand for real-time data exchange.

The project will develop three open source software implementations:

  • Legacy protocol converter
  • Client/server protocol
  • New protocol certification procedures

This will enhance the existing communication protocols, encourage data-exchange involvement and foster the integration of DES into the grid. Specifically, there are 9 use cases that aim to demonstrate the benefits of these open source software implementations.

Furthermore, they have established two main pillars to accomplish their objectives:

1st pillar: development of the open-source software and its three implementations, and integration of data into open data spaces.

2nd pillar: practical implementations connected to the existing infrastructure and development of Energy Management Systems to get a competitive advantage in the market.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under the grant agreement Nº101096511. “Funded by the European Union.
